Note: I tried to do this in PowerShell on Windows 10 and all it kept doing was print the help. In the normal command shell it worked as expected. RockPaperLizard - I don't know, but the alternative to not moving those few files to the end is to shift every other file on the disk.
You might try running ordinary Windows Defrag or Diskeeper after Ultradefrag; bear in mind however, that ordering every file by how many times it's used will be a long-running operation that will fall apart the next time you launch a web browser. Note that you'll now need to follow the download link to the "old versions," as the current version 8 is no longer FOSS.
Best tool by far was the old JKdefrag, now Mydefrag. Will defrag the MFT. Also, it's free. But neither is necessary to defrag the MFT. Daniel Sokolowski 10 10 silver badges 12 12 bronze badges. Yep, this.
I believe the defrag API was changed with Vista, so you don't even need to reboot. Is there another program [to be posted as a different answer] that can defragment the MFT? You are wrong. Plus, you can check the MyDrag scripts. Show 1 more comment. Follow the instructions described in this link use the fsutil.
Start Windows again and now you can shrink you partition. Regards Dave H. These allocations are most probably contiguous. If your disk has been under stress with lack of space then new files may force the MFT zone to be reduced, and any extensions of the MFT at this time might be outside the zone and not contiguous with the bulk of the MFT.
In this case you would have to relieve the stress by bringing the space used down, defragging to clear the MFT zone, and then defrag the MFT.
In Vista onwards the MFT zone is allocated as needed in mb chunks, sufficient for knocking on for , files to be recorded. When the first mb is full then a new zone is allocated anywhere on the disk and the MFT, and life, continues. You can defrag these mb chunks if you wish i. You can always cancel after the first few seconds if you're impatient. Thanks for the time to update info about Contig 1. Although using it, it did nothing about my MFT fragments.
Nice theory, but on my original Vista 32 filesystem which ran Vista since before SP1 is claimed to be , KB, and is in 1, fragments.
It appears to be in on average KB pieces, no where near MB chunks which would indeed be very satisfactory, though there's only 4 regions containing it on the Drive Map and no obvious reason why it shouldn't be relatively contiguous. Yes, the Vista filesystem seems noticeably more sluggish for some things than the fresher Win 7 one, held on same disk.
Checking it via Highlighted Tab from Drive Map, and doing "Defrag Checked" does not successfully defrag the file though it does try it pops up "No files were defragmented". Running an FS check did find some unallocated blocks marked as allocated in bitmap and fixed those but no change to the situation. Have downloaded Contig 1. This change to fixed amount versus a percentage was done to deal with increasing size of volumes and create better efficiencies.
For workstation or server profiles that have large MFT? Are you saying that your fragments are dotted all over the place or are they within a mb zone, and if so are they contiguous? I don't know whether an MFT expansion within the zone counts as another fragment. I think that if the MFT acts like any other file then it would count as additional fragments.
Maybe you've had a lot of expansion? With that many fragments you will have many MFT extension records and possibly a non-resident attribute cluster as well. Please note a different tool was used to display the charts above. The charts did not come from the programs used in the tutorial. The two programs that we have talked about work together to defrag your computer.
Click on the following programs to download them: contig. Once you have finished downloading these files, make sure they are both in the same directory or folder. No installation is required. The next step is to run Power Defragmenter. Click next , and you will arrive at the screen below:.
Defragment File s : Allows you to defragment up to 4 files Defragment Folder s : Allows you to defragment up to 4 folders Defragment Disk: Allows you to defragment a disk PowerMode TM Disk Defragmentation: Defragments at a power equivalent to two consecutive defragmentations. Time does not necessarily double. It does not really tell you how well the fragmentation process went but as you could see from the visuals above, it is quite effective.
If you wait minutes before closing the window after the process is finished, the following statistics will be displayed: — Hard Drive Space — Free Space — Largest free space extent — Percent File Fragmentation. While that may be true, many are noticing an increase in performance once they defrag their system, including myself. To defragment or not to defragment is entirely up to you. Sorry for all those confused. Email Address.
