Dead space game script

The Reapers and the Necromorphs are both ancient races that send out artifacts mass relays and Markers, respectively which guide and influence the development of space-faring species so they may be consumed when they're at the peak of their evolution.

This makes them both out to be Lovecraftian Great Old Ones. The main difference is that the Reapers preserve the species they assimilate while the Necromorphs are just hungry. So the macrolevel story does check out reasonably, but its implementation on a microlevel is haphazard at best.

The main problem is the addition of John Carver as a secondary player character to support the added co-op functionality. His presence does make sense from a narrative point of view. I've talked before about how Isaac's profession as an engineer doesn't really inform the way he carries himself , as he turns out to be a more effective one-man-army than the actual army.

But he's still an engineer and everyone treats him as such. Sending him out with a professional soldier at his side is a sensible tactic. That's the narrative side of things, but the way Carver is inserted into the gameplay makes me think that the decision to turn Dead Space 3 into a co-op game was made fairly late in development. Isaac is still very much the focus, as all the cutscenes aim the camera squarely at his face.

Whenever a cutscene ends for those playing Carver, the camera still pans to Isaac's posterior before quickly shifting, as if to say "Oh right, I'm following this guy.

The Awakened DLC does bring him back, but the ending to the main game should stand on its own. For Carver, it does not. It gets worse when the game is played in singleplayer. Rather than have Carver be controlled by the AI which is asking for trouble, unless you're Ken Levine , he only shows up in cutscenes and is absent during gameplay. He presumably finds a different route every time.

This means that he just sort of sticks his head in the door now and then to see what's going on. Aegis 7 is a gold mine, according to prospector's reports. Cobalt, Silicon, Osmium Now, where is she?

There she is. We have visual contact. Biggest Planetcracker in her class. And it looks like they already popped the cork. Hammond : "Corporal, take us in closer and hail them. And stay clear of the debris field. We're here to fix their ship, not the other way around.

Come in Ishimura. Kendra : "Never heard of a total communications blackout on one of these things. You'd think with a thousand people on board, someone would pick up the phone--".

Kendra : "It's a busted array like we thought. Sounds like they're having problems with their encoder. You get us down there and Isaac and I can fix it. Forty-eight hours max. Corporal Johnston : "Gravity tethers engaged. Automatic docking procedure is go. Hammond : "Hit the blast shields! Their guidance tether is damaged!

Switch to manual. A light flickers, then ship systems restart; the blast shields retract. Hammond : "I just saved our asses, Ms. If we had aborted at that speed and distance, we would have smashed right into the side of the Ishimura. Now settle down, and let's get to work. Corporal, report! Chen : "I'm not getting any readings from the port booster and we've lost comms and autopilot. It'll take some time to fix.

Okay, we're done. Clean bill of health for everyone. In the background, an automated greeting opens on a large screen. Kendra : "You didn't lose power to the port booster. You LOST the port booster! Hammond : "That security console is still live. Isaac, log in and see what you can find.

Kendra, get that elevator back online. Hammond : "Then re-route the damn power! Look, if we all cooperate, we can figure this out a lot sooner. Let's get that computer display up, Isaac. Hammond : "The tram system's offline. Getting around is going to be difficult. The air seems to be flowing again.

That's a start. Hammond : "Automatic quarantine must have tripped when the filtration system restarted. Everybody relax His RIG registers his death after a pause; it emits a flatline sound, audible even over subsequent gunfire. Unknown Man : "Is someone there? Computer Voice 2 : "Ship-wide tram system re-initialized. All trams now operational. Tram arriving at Flight Deck Station. Computer Voice 2 : "Hostile lifeforms detected. Hull damage critical. Evacuate immediately.

I guess I should be thankful they didn't settle for Isaac Dick. How many times have you watched that thing? Guess you really miss her. Thank you for flagrantly pointing that out to me. Yes, I do dearly miss my wife. There she is, the USG Ishimura.

And to stop you from going crazy about it for the entire game, my voice and likeness are being provided by Peter Mensah, who was kicked into a pit by Gerard Butler in I've never heard of a complete communications blackout on one of these massive mining vessels sent out to extract valuable materials from entire planets.

I will also insert contrived exposition in casual conversation by mentioning that the blackout started after the colony on the planet Aegis 7 uncovered a strange artifact. Open this door which is already unlocked and in perfect working order, and then separate yourself from us in that room over there. Whoa, really sensible of the security system to lock us inside a room with a walking hedge trimmer.

It looks like something is reanimating and morphing necrotic flesh! I think these are Actually, we ran a survey which showed that "Necromorph" is considered a much cooler name by our core demographic. You know, if someone is wounded enough to lose this much blood, I doubt they could still get up that high to write a message. Right, so I kill these things by cutting off their limbs. I already gathered from all the previews using strategic dismemberment as a marketing tool.

Isaac, don't bother shooting them in the head! Go for the limbs! Everybody, shoot off their limbs! It's the only way to kill them! Rip them off completely, like this game does to Event Horizon! Conserve ammo by dismembering enemy limbs and doing extra damage.

Ugh, how are these things still carrying around ammunition and health packs? Between their skin folds? There's no point in looking too much into that. Even those tentacle babies somehow have supplies on them. But on the upside, you can use that to see when enemies have actually died, because some of them tend to fake it.

Isaac, repair the tram system so we can get around the ship. Once you do, I'll help you find Nicole. I'm an engineer, it's my job to fix problems. You don't have to leverage my anxiety over my wife's safety to blackmail me into doing it.

Now I'll need the Captain's login to gain access to the ship's systems. He's in the morgue. Don't worry about our constant bickering, Isaac. It's just our way of providing the character drama you seem incapable of creating for yourself. Look, there's a kinesis module. It allows you to pick up and throw heavy objects. You'll have to MacGyver some kind of bomb to punch through this barricade.

It has holes big enough for me to crawl through. And I'm carrying industrial cutting tools that function exactly like weapons! No, there's clearly a transparent outline of a bomb attached to the barricade, so we'll go with that. Note that you can hear your own heartbeat. This means you have to be scared out of your mind. Good, now we can access the ship's systems. Oh wait, this computer is printing out a list of problems to fix.

Better take a tram over to the engineering deck. Isaac, somebody shut down the Ishimura's engines and now her orbit is decaying! You need to reconnect the fuel lines! Wait, if I know my horror movies, then I'm assuming that we're blundering in and fixing things which were intentionally disabled or otherwise sabotaged in order to stop this invasion from spreading.

That means we're the people that audiences tend to actively boo. Why would they limit the operation of the pumps to those who have kinesis modules when any set of working hands would do the trick? I wouldn't bother asking questions about the work ethics on a ship where the employees have to buy their own equipment. Isaac, the asteroid field will destroy this ship unless you can activate its defences!

You'll have to reroute the power through three junction boxes that couldn't be located any further apart from each other. The last junction box is on the other side of this deck. You'll have to head out into the vacuum of space to get to it. Right, I won't even bother to ask how my suit is still pressurised after it's been repeatedly ripped, punctured, torn, and slashed. The counter on your back indicates your oxygen reserves depleting. I will momentarily hold you in place to illustrate this.

Wait, I've now cornered myself at the far end of a room with loads of death traps. I just know pushing this button will magically send in a bunch of Necromorphs.

Isaac, the asteroids have just decided to simultaneously fling themselves at the ship! Manually operate the one defence cannon that didn't come on-line! Haven't you ever played Asteroids? Shoot at the rocks to break them up in smaller chunks, then shoot at the chunks to make them disappear completely. A huge creature is infecting our oxygen supply!

There's some poison on the medical deck you can use to kill it. Go there now. I know, but every locked door you came across the first time will now be opened, and vice-versa. Double back across this level five or six times to formulate the poison. Hello there. If the array of candles everywhere hasn't tipped you off yet, I'm batfuck crazy.
